So I walked into the studio this morning with desire to put clay to wheel. I feel almost burnt out. I do enjoy pottery but the past two days I haven't felt like doing much in there. Yesterday all I did was prep my pieces for glazing. Today, I put some decorations on one piece and called it good for the day. Tomorrow I really do want to go in and make a couple plates and maybe a bowl or two; however, I just don't want to make anything today. Is it normal to take a break for a couples days then start up again?
Sharon,
ReplyDeleteI think you have to fill the vessel. (The vessel being you.) Go look at some stuff. You can't always be outputting and never be inputting. I just spend 20 minutes bopping around people's blogs and running into pottery related stuff. I had no direction, I was basically clicking on things that looked pretty or sounded pretty. I follow some random blogs and somehow I ended up at a blog about pottery. It's certainly not the only place to go, but go to http://musingaboutmud.blogspot.com/ and doodle around. Or do the old Google Image search for some random clay form (i.e., ceramic pitchers) or just spend some time looking through the clay books and magazines in the studio or library. Be aimless about it but let yourself look at some stuff you haven't seen before. (that's what I do when I'm stuck). And yes, sometimes you need a studio break. Your life isn't all clay. Looking at fall leaves or talking to friends or reading Harry Potter--all that fills the vessel too.
Sharon, I think I met you this morning. You were glazing your dishes when I came in to glaze my extruded forms. Nice to meet you.
ReplyDeleteI like Rachel's comments about "fill the vessel". I usually have several art projects working at one time; clay, glass and painting. This gives me a break from any one thing. I figure if I am just goofing around in art and having fun (maybe not actually working on a piece), that counts as productive time.
